When you step aboard a Port St. Joe fishing charter, you’ll immediately see why this place earned the nickname “small town, big heart.” Get ready to come on as a customer, but leave as a friend, as your welcoming captain regales you with tales of the waters, and fulfills all your fishing dreams.

The St. Joe Bay holds all of the inshore riches one could wish for in Florida’s Panhandle. These calm waters are home to Redfish and Spotted Seatrout, with Tripletail, Flounder, Sheepshead, and even Tarpon making yearly appearances. You can get your fill of delicious Scallops here, while Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish can be found around the mouth of the Gulf County Canal.

Speaking of the canal, there’s plenty of freshwater species to target here. Catfish, Bass, and Bream are in abundance further up the freshwater streams, and even in the lakes just a short drive away from Port St. Joe.

Despite all this, the Gulf of Mexico is also tempting anglers just beyond the barrier peninsula. Take a charter from this spit of land, and you could be on some productive reefs within minutes. There are hundreds of underwater structures just a stone’s throw from shore, allowing you to target Snappers, Amberjack, Kingfish, Cobia, and much more within sight of land.

You’ll also have the chance to go offshore, but these charters will require at least 10 hours on the water. For all other trips, you can spend anywhere from a couple of hours to a full day getting your fix of fishing.

Rules & Regulations

If you’re fishing aboard a Port St. Joe saltwater fishing charter, then your fishing license will be covered. Head out with a freshwater guide, however, and you’ll need to get your own. Whichever you choose, your professional companion will make sure you’re fishing within the law.

January
January is all about backwater fishing in Port St. Joe. With colder water temperatures in the bay, look for Redfish and Trout in the Intracoastal Waterway and Gulf County Canal. Live bait is the way to go in this weather.
February

Winter fishing continues, with the best results coming from fishing deep in the backcountry waters. In the bay, Sheepshead are usually biting in good numbers. But watch out: these tasty fish are renowned for stealing bait!

March

The waters and the fishing gradually start to warm up, just in time for Spring Break. Guides come back onto the water after a winter of hunting, and the bay starts to fill up with people on cruises and fishing charters.

April

The fishing gets better and better in Port St. Joe in the springtime. Redfish come out into the bay and are joined by big "Gator" Trout. Joining them come Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Ladyfish, Bluefish, and Sharks.

May

May could be one of the best times to fish these waters. The flats of the bay come alive with Redfish and Trout making for fun fishing, not to mention the incredible nearshore action along the reefs.

June

The impressive action on the flats continues, with Inshore Slams becoming common on charter trips. Tripletail is also being caught in good numbers. Meanwhile, Bull, Nurse, and Blacktip Sharks peruse the waterways.

July

As the waters warm, the Redfish and Trout action can quiet down a little on the flats. But with big Tarpon, Sharks, Jacks, Tripletail, and Spanish Mackerel all being caught nearshore, there are plenty of reasons to dip a line.

August

Summer fishing is all about variety in these parts. While inshore fishing is as good as ever, there are also Snappers, Cobia, Amberjacks, and many more on the reefs and in the deep waters offshore.

September

September is prime time for scalloping in the grass beds of St. Joseph Bay. Make sure to bring your snorkeling gear if you come at this time of year, as the waters are just right for taking a dip. Fishing remains good, too.

October

As the month progresses, colder conditions gradually start to set in. This is great news for anglers, who usually notice a much better bite from Redfish and Trout. With Flounder also available, it's Slam season once again.

November

Fall fishing is some of the best you can get in Port St. Joe. Look out for migrating Bull Redfish, as well as Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Pompano. There's plenty to fill the freezer, and the action is hot, too.

December

As winter sets in, the fish start to move into deeper holes in the bay and backcountry. Live bait becomes the weapon of choice. As the small town winds down for winter, some guides turn to hunting rather than fishing.

Pack lots of sunscreen and water. If your not a hardcore angler the more comfortable you are out on the water the easier it is to stay out there and find the fish.

Donโ€™t set your expectations too high. At the end of the day fishing is fishing. A good Captain will do his best and the rest is up to the fish. Sometimes they just wonโ€™t bite and other times itโ€™s game on

Be ready for anything. When the water is clear you must use a fluorocarbon leader if you want to catch anything.

Book at least an 8 hour trip and understand that Captains are not Jesus, they can't just speak to the fish and make them jump in the boat! It is called "Fishing" not "Catching" for a reason!

The Captain was very knowledgeable and knew the area very well. He put us on the fish at each spot. We caught and took home spotted sea trout, flounder, and mangrove snapper. We also caught quite a few other fish that were not keepers. Captain Man was great, kept us baited, unhooked all the fish and filleted the catch. We would definitely go with him again.

Captain Jason was an excellent guide on our recent fishing trip. While the fishes were not biting well we still had an excellent trip and a great time. Captain Jason did take us to a few spots and we did catch a few fish just the fishes that were not in season so had to throw back. We will definitely be using captain Jason in the future as we had a great time and he was an excellent captain.

He helped us learn more about successful scalloping techniques and we got about a bakers dozen. We caught a few fish too. You can tell Keven is still learning his trade (we are fairly experienced fishermen from Wisconsin and starting to do more gulf fishing), and sometimes the inexperience showed, but he is incredibly nice and it was a fun afternoon overall.
