To freshwater anglers and fly fishermen, Maryland offers over a hundred streams, rivers, and reservoirs to explore. Gunpowder Falls and the Savage River feature world-class Trout fishing. The famous Potomac River is abundant with Bass, Catfish, Snakehead, and other stillwater favorites.
However, most anglers visit Maryland to fish the Chesapeake Bay. The bay is famous for its exhilarating Striped Bass fishery, but it’ll also give you a chance to fish for many other species. Some of these include Redfish, Bluefish, Flounder, and Croaker.
The Free State also features fantastic nearshore and offshore fishing. Most of it takes place out of Ocean City, situated on the Atlantic coast. Nearshore, you’ll catch Seabass, Tautog, and other reef species. Offshore, in the Gulf Stream, you’ll see the likes of Mahi Mahi, Tuna, and Marlin biting the end of your line.
While it’s possible to fish year-round, most charter captains in Maryland operate between April and mid-December. If you’re fishing the bay or close to shore in the ocean, half day trips will give you plenty of action. Gulf Stream trips require more time, as you’ll have to go at least 55 miles offshore.
Rules & Regulations
Saltwater charter captains will cover your license if you’re fishing aboard their boat. Solo anglers 16 and up will need to buy a permit, whether you’re fishing freshwater or saltwater. If you’re keen on catching some Trout, you’ll need to get a Trout stamp with your fishing license.

Captain Kenny and First Mate Kenny did a great job of getting us on the fish. It was a slow start but we made up for it bringing in 18 for the trip. Four of us fished a full day with Captain D. Best experience weโve ever had with a Fishing Charter! We limited out in the first few hours with nice sized Rockfish, then switched to Bluefish, then to bottom fish. Captain kept us on fish the whole time. We laughed, enjoyed his company, and when we are ready to go again we know who to call. Canโt ask for a better experience fishing.

We booked a 4 hr inshore trolling trip targeting bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and Bonito. As soon as we got out to the location, we were right on the fish. Hard-fighting bonito! What a day! And the fish kept biting. An amazing bonus...Mahi Mahi! We pulled 4 in at the same time! Great trip for having fun for the whole family. My 6 yr old nefew had a BLAST! Captain Kenny and First Mate Kenny did a great job of getting us on the fish. It was a slow start but we made up for it bringing in 18 for the trip. First mate Kenny was great about letting us share in some of the experience which let us learn a bit and added to the fun. This was our second trip on Lucky Strike and would definitely recommend.

Four of us fished a full day with Captain D. Best experience weโve ever had with a Fishing Charter! We limited out in the first few hours with nice sized Rockfish, then switched to Bluefish, then to bottom fish. Captain kept us on fish the whole time. We laughed, enjoyed his company, and when we are ready to go again we know who to call. Canโt ask for a better experience fishing.

Great trip! Didnโt catch any keepers, but thatโs the way fishing goesโฆCaptain John tried many times to find us the best spot. Just enjoyed being out on the boat, seeing the dolphins and the banter between Captain John and first mate Hunterโฆgreat guys. Will do it again with them some day.

Captain John and his mate Hunter did not disappoint. They handed us the proper tools and had the knowledge and patience to teach us how to use them. Highly recommend Bottom Bouncer charter.
