Hopping aboard one of Houston’s fishing charters is an adventure you won’t soon forget. Known as the “Bayou City,” this metropolis offers great access to a variety of fishing grounds, including rivers, lakes, and the nearby bays like Trinity and Galveston Bay. This means you’ll have different options to choose from, and you can plan your fishing trip accordingly.

When it comes to freshwater fishing, Houston doesn’t disappoint. Largemouth Bass, White Bass, Crappie, Catfish, and Carp all inhabit the many lakes and rivers in the area. Heading down to the bays will see you going after some saltwater favorites, like Flounder, Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Sheepshead.

Depending on your interests, you can decide to book a half day trip and have a nice, relaxing introduction to Houston fishing. Maybe even turn it into quality family time? If you’re looking to maximize your chances, cover the most ground, and fill your bags, a full day trip would be the best choice.

Where do you find the charters? Well, you can head out to one of the nearby lakes, like Lake Conroe, and you’ll have no issue finding a guide ready to take you out. If you’re looking for a saltwater fishing adventure, head over to Clear Lake, or the nearby towns of Baytown and Texas City, and take your pick.

Rules & Regulations

Anyone 17 and older is required to have a Texas fishing license in order to legally fish the waters around Houston, even if they’re fishing on a charter. Depending on whether you’re freshwater or saltwater fishing, you’ll need to buy the appropriate type of license.

January

Kick off the year by heading out on the water and having a little winter adventure. You’ll find that the Redfish and Trout bite is great. And if you’re looking for a freshwater excursion, Largemouth and White Bass are biting.

February

Redfish and Speckled Trout are joined by Black Drum in February, so you have a variety of options to choose from. And you can always go after Bass and Catfish in the rivers and lakes of Houston.

March

With spring on our doorstep, the fish are slowly starting to wake up, so you’ll find Redfish, Trout, Black Drum, and Spanish Mackerel are biting in the bays. In the lakes and rivers, you’ll find the Bass and Crappie bite is consistent.

April

Hit the bays in April and enjoy some great fishing going after Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Mackerel. And if you head to the deep waters, you’ll get the chance to battle Mahi Mahi as well. Bass, Crappie, and Catfish are great freshwater targets in April.

May

This is when the fishing really starts to heat up! You’ll find a variety of fish biting hard, including Redfish, Trout, Mackerel, Cobia, and different Shark species. In the lakes and rivers, Bass, Crappie, Catfish, and Carp are all possible targets.

June

Nothing beats summer in Texas. All the fish come out to play as the temperatures warm up, so hit the bays for some great action with Sharks, Redfish, Trout, and Flounder. Stay inland if you’re looking for Largemouth Bass or Crappie.

July

With summer in full swing, the fishing season reaches its peak in July. Trout, Flounder, Redfish, Sharks, and Mackerel are all biting hard. Visit the freshwaters for some Bass action, as well as great chances of reeling in Catfish and Crappie.

August

And as the summer continues, so does the fishing. Visit Houston in August for great chances of reeling in prized Redfish, Trout, and Flounder, as well as Mackerel and Mahi Mahi. Largemouth and White Bass are biting as well.

September

With fall slowly coming to Houston, the temperatures drop, but there’s still a lot of fishing to be done. You can go after Redfish, Trout, and Flounder in the bays, or head to one of the city’s lakes or rivers for Bass and Crappie action.

October

As the temperatures drop in October, you’ll find that fishing stays great in Houston. Visiting the lakes and rivers will let you go after Bass, Crappie, and Catfish, while hitting the bays will yield great results with Redfish, Trout, and Flounder.

November

As winter slowly approaches, you’ll find that November is quieter, making it a good time to relax and enjoy some fishing. Redfish, Trout, and Flounder are all biting, as well as Largemouth and White Bass in the freshwater lakes.

December

If you’re looking for a fishing adventure just before the holidays, consider heading out in Houston. You can catch some nice Redfish, Trout, and Flounder, as well as some prized Bass and Catfish in December.

Had a great experience with Cpt. Mark. We successfully caught some black drum and trout which was exactly what I was looking for. Cpt. Mark knows all of the hot spots in the area and the his launch is very easy to find and access. I would definitely recommend booking a trip and plan to do so again in the near future.

Captain Mark runs a great charter/guide service. He took my 19 year old daughter and me fishing in August. This is a tougher time of year for fishing, but he kept us on fish all morning. He is great with young adults and I would recommend him to all my friends. We plan on going with him again in the Fall. Kevin P

Captain David was an amazing guide. We caught 50 to 60 fish, had 6 SOLID keepers. Captain David took care of my boys nonstop the whole trip. Made sure they had what they needed, and showed them exactly where to get on the fish. I truly wish we were staying longer because I'd go out again with Bow to Stern!!

Let me start by saying after reading one bad review we decided to still book with him. Let me tell you it was so much fun!!! He knew where the fish were at and the friendly banter made the day go by fastโ€ฆ maybe a little too fast lol. We canโ€™t wait to book with him again!!! 10 out of 10 would recommend!! We caught out limit on black drum and also got a red. I will surely be telling my friends about him!! He also how is out a little longer than the set time. Thank you Captian David!
