Want to cast a line in paradise? Hop aboard one of the many fishing charters in Hawaii. There’s postcard-perfect azure waters and white sandy beaches to explore, as well as some world-famous fish on offer. Hawaii is a known deep sea sportfishing haven, but that’s not where the action ends. With reefs, flats, and freshwater fishing grounds on offer, you can cast off on the adventure of your dreams.

Head out on a deep sea fishing excursion, and you’ll encounter year-round Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and Billfish. In some locations, the seafloor drops to a thousand feet just a mile from shore. To get the most out of your adventure, though, a full day trip is a must. More of a reef fishing enthusiast? Plumb underwater structure for local bottom fish including Long-Tail Red Snapper (Onaga) and Short-Tail Red Snapper (Ehu) on a shorter trip.

If you want to spend even less time traveling, explore Hawaii's flats for Bonefish. A half day trip is the perfect introduction to these waters, and you can even try out fly fishing. There’s plenty of inshore action for freshwater fans, too. Largemouth Bass, Peacock Bass, and Channel Catfish can be found in a variety of reservoirs and waterways, with half and full day trips on offer.

There’s an impressive number of departure points dotted all over the Aloha State. Big Island’s Kailua-Kona offers incredible deep sea action, Maui is home to lots of reefs (and spearfishing action!), Kauai has a great Billfish bite as well as an abundance of freshwater fish...the opportunities are endless!

Rules & Regulations

You don’t need a license to fish in Hawaii, unless you’re freshwater fishing. Some species are subject to strict regulations, such as Onaga and Ehu, but your captain will be able to fill you in.

January

Bigeye Tuna make for a delicious feast for offshore anglers in January. Head out and bag one for dinner, then visit the Oahu Fringe Festival to soak up the local arts scene.

February

The Maui Whale Festival gathers 20,000 visitors each year to celebrate these majestic creatures. More into fish than mammals? Shortbill Spearfish and Bigeye Tuna are both on fire.

March

Honolulu Festival manages to combine an all-out party with a genuine display of ethnic and economic solidarity. It’s worth visiting if you can tear yourself away from the Striped Marlin bite.

April

Black and Striped Marlin, Spearfish, Bigeye Tuna, Ono (Wahoo), and Mahi Mahi are all amazing in April. On the other end of the scale, this is one of the best months for Hawaii Bass fishing.

May

Blue Marlin arrive in a big way in May, joining their Black and Striped cousins for a month of incredible Billfishing. Shortbill Spearfish are also around, so you could be in with a Super Grand Slam!

June

The Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series starts in style with the Kona Kickoff and the Firecracker Open. Off the water, the Maui Film Festival is a great place to relax after a hard day at sea.

July

Tournament fever burns strong, with the Kona Throw Down and Skins Marlin Derby, not to mention the Blue Marlin World Cup. Check out the Honolulu Ukulele Festival if you get the time.

August

The Kona Shootout Big Game Tournament and Big Island Marlin Tournament give the pro teams no rest in August. Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna) are on fire, and make for the best Tuna fishing Hawaii sees all year.

September

Tournament season draws to a close with Kona’s It’s a Wrap Tournament. The whole state comes alive in an explosion of color during the month-long Aloha Festivals.

October
Want to see Hawaii through the eyes of the locals? Visit the Hawaii International Film Festival to watch locally-made documentaries about island life. Afterward, head offshore for late-season Mahi Mahi action.

November

The fishing tournaments may be over, but the surfers are just getting started. The Vans Triple Crown tournament series kicks off on Oahu’s breathtaking North Shore.

December

The Vans Triple Crown draws to a close, just as the Honolulu City Lights festival brings the town to life in a spectacle of seasonal cheer. Bigeye Tuna are firmly back on the menu by December.

Try a half day trip here before going on longer ones if youโ€™ve never tried. Seasickness is real and miserable. Luckily I was ok but it was there. Someone else on our boat started puking 15 min in. Poor girl. At least she caught a fish too.

Follow the crews instructions to keep your bait close to the bottom while not getting snagged and pretty soon you should be catching and not just fishing. Everyone in our party of 3 caught fish and only one was an experienced fisher.

We got out early and started covering ground (actually about 6k feet deep of water) and hooked up with a 192# Marlin! This was my first Marlin and captain Dave made it a great experience. He even went out of his way to make sure we got some good pictures. Good times and a memorable moment for sure.

Canโ€™t say enough about this fishing trip. If you just want to have fun and catch fish this is the trip for you. The 2 hour charter was the perfect amount of time, and we were pulling fish in the entire time. Captain Rick and the crew really made you feel at home. It wasnโ€™t a tourist experience, it felt like you were fishing on a friends boat. Would totally do it again next time Iโ€™m on the island!

Captain Chris and Jordan did a great job and we loved fishing with them. They worked hard getting our poles rigged and finding the fish. We even found schools of Tuna surfacing the water and was fortunate enough to get to catch one. We caught a Uku, Mahi Mahi, and the Blue Fin Tuna. At least 4 other fish got off our lines as we didnโ€™t get them hooked but half of our live bait would be gone so they were biting. There were 6 of us and we all had a fabulous time. Highly recommend.

Dave and I conversed with what we wanted to fish for and we had a game plan. Sure enough Daveโ€™s experience led us to success and after multiple attempts we finally caught a blue marlin. Better still was I probably learned more from Dave on the ins and outs of actually running the boat than I did on any of our other half dozen charters. Great trip and would do it again when we come back out to the islands
