Inshore Fishing in Galveston

There’s something special about Galveston inshore fishing. With amazing scenery in the bays, a 150 year old jetty system, and 32 miles of beaches, you barely even need to mention the fish to want to get out on the water. Factor in some of the best Redfish, Trout, and Flounder fishing in the state, and you really can’t go wrong. There’s a reason why Galveston is considered one of the top places for saltwater fishing in the US.

What to catch and where to fish for it

You don’t need to travel far to get to the fish in these parts. Most Galveston inshore fishing charters are located just minutes from the action, with jetties and beaches providing immediate fishing access. Local specialties include big Black Drum and trophy Redffish, with Speckled Trout, Flounder, Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, and much more there for the catching, too. Various species of Shark are also common in these waters. Catching a Bull Shark right by the Galveston Fishing Pier is something you won't forget in a hurry.

Flounder fishing is also something of a specialty in these parts. For your best chance of catching these tasty flatfish, join the best Galveston Bay fishing charters at Rollover Pass in the East Bay during the fall. At other times of the year, head to the flats around Pelican Island to search for them alongside tasty Redfish and Trout.

Top Techniques

Most often, inshore fishing in Galveston involves casting a popping cork with live bait attached. But experienced anglers will find drift fishing and casting with soft plastic lures is especially productive, particularly in the fall, winter, and spring. Live bait fishing can be just as good, especially in the Summer when the fish are deeper in the water. Gulf killfish (known as marsh minnows or mud minnows in these parts) are local favorites on the bait front.

Insider’s tip: for the real Galveston inshore fishing experience, get your feet wet. Join a local guide and try wade fishing with artificials or bait under a popping cork -- you’ll be amazed at the results!

Book a private charter. A tad more expensive but way worth the experience. What a blast during the fall season.

If you think you might get seasick, take your motion sickness medication at least 30 minutes before boarding. My (adult) son found this out the hard way.

Ask questions about the charter, such as do you fish or the captian. The charter I was on the crew cast the poles, set the hook and you just realed the fish in. Not what a seasoned fisherman really wants.

By all means, book with a friendly, knowledgeable guide like Rene. He does all he can do to get you to where the fish hang out. Local reefs and honey holes are hard to find. Learn the basics from a Pro!

We all got to catch a fish. They were mostly small and we threw them back so it was for fun more than it was for dinner. Keep that in mind but it was absolutely perfect for my family.

Seems like common sense but make sure you have sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, dont have your phone where it could fall in the water, and listen to the captain ?
