With the waters of the Gulf kissing the shores on one side, and the wilderness of the Atlantic on the other, it’s easy to see what makes the Keys unique. And fishing in Big Pine Key is no exception. Small and beautiful, this little town will give you the best of both worlds – a relaxing day and exciting fishing!

You can fish for just about anything in these waters. Inshore you’ll see Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit, Redfish, Speckled Trout, and Pompano – to name a few. There’s also big Snapper and Grouper lurking in the reefs, waiting to take your bait. Head a bit further offshore, and you’ll be rewarded with trophy Sailfish, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, and of course, Marlin.

If you’re looking for an introduction to the area, or just want to take your family out for a day of fun, a half day inshore trip is a great choice. However, if you want to test the waters for some big pelagics, think about booking a full day or an extended full day trip as you’ll need more time to get to the fishing grounds.

There are fishing charters everywhere you look in Big Pine Island! Really, it’s a small town surrounded by water, so just head to the nearest waterway, and chances are there’s a charter waiting there. Just choose between the Gulf and the Atlantic and head over to that side of the island.

Rules & Regulations

Hop aboard a Big Pine Key fishing charter, and you won’t have to worry about fishing licenses, as you’ll be covered by the captain. There are regulations when it comes to certain fish species, so book your trip with a reputable captain who’ll keep you in the loop and make sure you’re fishing within the law.

January

Trout seem to never let an angler down around Florida. You can also get Snook around the inshore shallows. Offshore waters can reward you with Tuna, Mackerel, Sailfish, and Swordfish.

February

Now you have a solid offer of Trout, Permit, some Reds, and Snook inshore. Further out, you can get Mangrove Snapper, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail Snapper, and Bills.

March

Tarpon time is upon us. Head to the flats to get them. Bonefish are also on the chew. Pre-spawning Permit are feisty. Also, Redfish are strong and can be massive. Inshore is the place to be.

April

The weather’s improving and fishing’s getting better. You can get Bonefish inshore, as well as Permit and Jack Crevalle, while offshore there are Amberjack, Sailfish, Swordfish, and other big catches.

May

Mangrove Snapper is available, but you can also get bags full of Permit, Bonefish, and Cobia. Out there, Mahi Mahi, Swordfish, Kingfish, Yellowfin Tuna, and Wahoo are rising in numbers.

June

Tarpon are biting like crazy. Hire a boat and head out to the bridges and flats to make your day even better. Offshore waters boast Amberjack, Billfish, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and you can get Grouper around reefs.

July

The hot fishing action continues. If you look inshore, you can still get Tarpon, Permit, and some Cobia. Offshore, the fish are biting heavily. Some Sailfish, many Swordfish, Tuna, and Wahoo are yours to claim.

August

The summer break is still on, and the fishing is on par with the heat. Go on an offshore trip and get yourself strong Amberjack, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, some Tuna, and more.

September

Kids go back to school, but the fish are going nowhere. In inshore waterways you can catch Permit, Reds, Trout, Bonefish, whereas an offshore trip can get you a Marlin, an occasional Tuna, Wahoo, and some other members of the Bill family.

October

As the heat drops, Snook rise in number, here to stay until February. The offshore waters remain productive and you can get some Kings, Tuna, Wahoo, and Swordfish. Head to the reefs for some Grouper and Snapper.

November

Kids like Lemon and Blacktip Shark and this is a good time to get them. Cobia are in solid numbers, as are Trout and Snook. Offshore, Tuna numbers are improving.

December

Barracuda are in their prime time. Go and get them. Don’t miss out on Wahoo. They are now as strong as ever and put up an excellent fight. Big Pine Swordfish are still there, ready for some rod-bending action.

Great trip! My son and Captain Jim bonded immediately. After trying to make me a fisherman, Captain Jim accepted failure with dignity . Luc and Captain Jim were able to catch enough Mahi to satisfy our taste for fish. If you want to learn about the ocean and learn how to catch fish, then Captain Jim is the charter to book. It was a pleasure to spend the day fishing with a man with similar old fashioned American values as myself. GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS CAPTAIN JIM.

Beautiful crystal clear water, fish are plentiful but Mother Nature is not to be messed with. We saw a huge water spout touchdown not far from us for about 6-7 minutes. Storms come out of nowhere and the currents are strong. If you are inexperienced hire a guide

Big Pine Key is very close to Marathon. Marathon being far better of a location when truly wanting the Florida Keys Fishing Experience. There are no shortage of available "Honey Holes" for finding the fish you're looking for.

Captain Steve was absolutely great! We went out and within 15 minutes of casting we had Yellow Tail. Saw Barracuda chasing down our Yellow Tail too which was super cool. Caught a Trigger fish and Mahi Mahi. His boat is in immaculate condition. He is super knowledgeable, personable, friendly and a pleasure to hang with on the water. He fileted our fish and bagged for us to take home. Highly highly recommend. Will be back to go fish again. THANKS for a super fun day on the water!!!

Great trip, had a great time with the Captain, he knows what heโ€™s doing. We caught a lot of fish and brought home about 14 large Mahi Mahi and threw back as many under size. Only criticism was limited seating on the boat. Everything else was great! Would book again.

We had a 3/4 day booked with Capt Robert. It was brutally hot. We didn't find a ton of action, but Capt Robert was on the lookout the entire time. He was very accommodating, adapted our approach to very different fishing styles (I fish spin and my partner fishes fly) and we stayed on a very limited number of fish for how hot it was. This was our second trip with Robert and he was super pro both times. Highly recommend.

Best fishing charter for young kids hands down. Captains wife spent the entire day attached to my 7yr olds hip teaching and helping. Captain was also extremely aware of my sons attention span and moved the boat etc to coincide with when he needed breaks. Boat was extremely well maintained.

We had a great experience fishing with Captain Beamer. We were able to land a bunch of lane snappers, a couple of mutton snappers, and even a red grouper. On the previous day, we were inches from hooking up with mahi, but they just werenโ€™t having it! Captain Beamer was very accommodating and went out of his way to ensure that we had a great time. Thanks again, Captain!

Had a blast. In then middle of June in the Keys, the bite is going to slow down but we still put fish in the box. Capt Beamer put us on fish in every one of his spots. When the half day was done, he still wanted to continue to fish so I could go home with more fish. A class act. I will fish with him again.

My wife and I originally booked a half day backcountry trip with Captain Beamer. He reached out a few days prior and asked if we wanted to go Mahi fishing instead because the weather was going to be perfect, and he would cover the difference! It was one of the best fishing charters I have been on. We ended up catching plenty of Mahi and jacks. Fishing and hanging out with captain Beamer was relaxing like fishing with a friend. Definitely will be coming back again!
