The Land of the Midnight Sun is one of the nation's great fishing treasures. With the longest coastline in the country (66,000 miles), 3 million lakes, and 12,000 rivers, Alaska is the place to be if you want to experience some of the best fishing of your life. As if that wasn't enough, you'll be awarded with breathtaking views wherever you go. However, the Last Frontier State is vast and wild, and you'll need a local to show you around. This is where Alaska fishing charters come into play.

The biggest advantage of coming to Alaska is the diversity of fish you can target. This is the only place in the US where you can catch all five species of Pacific Salmon, as well as some of the biggest Rainbow Trout you'll ever see.

It only gets better on the saltwater front. Here, you can hook into Halibut with their weight well into three digits, delicious Lingcod, and more than 20 species of Rockfish. These fellas grow big, so not only will you have a delicious dinner, but also a catch that will earn you your bragging rights.

The variety of trips Alaska fishing charters organize matches the diversity of fish. You can go out for a quick half day or 3/4 day excursion, or book a full day for more time on the water and a better chance of that trophy catch. Experienced anglers can spend a few days in a fishing lodge, where professional local guides will take them to the most prolific remote fisheries.

Some of the best destinations to start your Alaskan adventure are the Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage, Homer, Soldotna, Seward, and Juneau.

Rules & Regulations

Everyone who casts a line in Alaska needs to have a valid fishing license first. Residents who are 18 and older can buy an annual fishing license, while non-residents aged 16 and older can choose between several different license options. If you plan on fishing for Chinook Salmon, you'll need to buy an additional King Salmon stamp.

January

Picture Alaska in winter and you probably imagine nothing but ice! Just below the ice are delicious surprises, however, including Arctic Char, Grayling, and Northern Pike. If you’re game, try ice fishing with a local guide.

February

Hardcore fly anglers can make the most of February by targeting Steelhead and other Trout species in one of the many rivers and streams. Be wary of the weather though, because it can limit transportation.

March

Spring is coming, but the prime season for saltwater fishing is still weeks away. Those who do venture offshore at this time of year need to keep an eye on the weather forecast, so that they can fish safely.

April

Saltwater fishing can be quite good in April, with a decent chance of landing smaller Halibut, Rockfish, and even King Salmon in some places like Homer. Still the weather is not stable, and the water is cold. The best is yet to come!

May

Salmon fishing is heating up in Alaska! Kings are the first to arrive in late May, with some of the biggest specimens appearing in the Kenai River. Halibut and Rockfish are out and about, hungry and ready to pounce.

June

It's prime time to go fishing for King Salmon, and Chum and Sockeye are popular as well. Bottom fishing is excellent, with Halibut and Rockfish at their peak, too. Lingcod may not be open to harvest yet, depending on where you fish.

July

Alaska’s summer fishing season is in full swing, with an abundance of King, Silver, Sockeye, and Chum Salmon swimming in local waters. Look for Pink Salmon in years that end in an even number.

August

Late summer is one of the best times to cast your line in Alaska, with Halibut, Lingcod, Rockfish, and Salmon biting vigorously along the coast. Anglers fishing the rivers can enjoy solid Trout action.

September

Freshwater fishing is excellent in the fall and the biggest star are massive Rainbow Trout with Northern Pike, Grayling, and Lake Trout at their peak. In some areas, Salmon fishing is still strong.

October

Come October, most of Alaska fishing charters start shutting down for the winter, but there are still guides who can take you bottom fishing for Halibut, Lingcod, and Rockfish when the weather allows.

November

Local lakes are freezing over and that means it’s ice fishing season again! Come carve a hole and drop a line for Northern Pike, Grayling, and Char, or try your luck in a local river for Trout. But remember, layers, layers, layers!

December

Alaska's winter is not to be messed with, but with proper preparation, you can ice fish the many frozen lakes for Lakers, Pike, and Arctic Char. You can also go to local streams for some light tackle and fly action if the weather's on your side.

Make plans with your guide before booking your room. They may be able to help you find a good place and a better deal right in Cooper landing. I booked a room in Soldotna before I made fishing plans and spent a little extra time traveling. It wasn't too bad, but it would have been nicer to be right there.

First time salmon fishing and first time salmon fishing on the river. The fishing is sitting right off the bank anchored down while you lure is diving close to the bottom from the current. Just a lot of sitting waiting for a bite.

Don't be disappointed if you don't catch all the fish you expect to. So many variables with weather and conditions. Enjoy the experience of it all. The camaraderie, the scenery is wonderful, being out on the big water. Being able to go fishing in Alaska is a blessing, not a given.

Plan on wet rainy weather. Temp is 58 to 60 deg. F, but feels like 70. wear a ball cap to keep the rain hood out of your face. Bring anything you like to drink with you ie: beer, whisky, etc....And the most important thing is to enjoy yourself!

This is surf fishing. We thought it was specific for halibut which is not true. Title of this fishing expedition needs to change. It was a great experience. We caught fish without sea sickness and if you need to go pee there is bathroom :) beautiful scenes to view while fishing. Take your chairs, coolers, relax, enjoy and have good time. My grandsons (10 & 13) recommend and so do we.

Captain Noah and Mate Kai of the Renegade delivered a fantastic day of fishing for halibut and rockfish. All 12 customers filled their limits and several hauled in good sized halibuts. The fishing was well organized, with the boat on hot spots, baits replaced promptly and fish handled quickly. The Renegade itself is a relatively new, smooth sailing and comfortable fishing boat. A highly recommended outfit and experience.

Cole is a great Captain. Although my timing and the weather werenโ€™t ideal for the late Silver โ€œrunโ€, Cole set us up on fish early and communicated with other fishermen in the area to continue to land us fish. Cole was super easy to talk with as he gave us fishing tips and things to look for and do while we were visiting. I will definitely see him again on my next trip to Kenai.
